A Love Affair With Loudness: Why Professional Clothing Doesn't Have to Be Grayscale

I chose "Pop Muzik" by M (Robin Scott) to set the tone for this post because of its ability to worm its way into playlist as a new wave, disco punk song with an uplifting effect on the listener. It is a musical celebration of a particular expression and invites the listeners to take part in this celebration.

The songs that I love the most are the ones that bring together multiple elements that seemingly do not agree. I take a similar approach to my own professional wardrobe. There is no need for me to blend into the pack of gray, navy, and black suit wearing professionals. Not when my style exists as the perfect opportunity for expressing myself within a workplace.

My thesis is that for too long "professional" has been synonymous with "muted". This comes from the idea that to be taken seriously, professionals must blend in so they can become another cog in the corporate machine. Ironically, this is a surprisingly gender-neutral stance to be taken by the same corporate entities that argue "men cannot wear women's suits" and "women cannot wear men's suits". (An argument weakened by the fact that many suits from yesteryear are only 'gendered' by the side that the buttons fasten.)

Think about it for just a moment. We spend a significant amount of our lives in work attire. Shouldn't we choose clothes that make us feel confident, comfortable, and authentically us? Why are we being asked to sacrifice our personality for the sake of conformity?

Now, this isn't a call for everyone to show up to board meetings in tropical shirts. It's about finding that balance between professionalism and personal style. There is a need to inject subtle hints of your personality into your workwear, whether it's through a vibrant tie, a patterned blouse, or a boldly colored accessory.

Beyond the Grayscale: Adding Personality to Your Professional Wardrobe

The key to any aspect of diversifying your closet is to be intentional. Consider your industry, your company culture, and your personal brand (or what you want it to become!).

Here are a few tips for incorporating more personality into your professional wardrobe:
  • Start Small: If you're hesitant to make a drastic change, begin with small touches. A colorful pocket square, a unique pair of cufflinks, or a statement necklace can add personality without being overwhelming.
  • Fabric and Texture: Don't underestimate the power of texture. A linen blazer, a silk blouse, or a wool skirt can add visual interest and depth to your outfit.
  • Prints and Patterns: Subtle prints, like pinstripes or herringbone, can add a touch of sophistication. If you're feeling bolder, experiment with floral prints, geometric designs, or even animal prints (in moderation, of course).
  • Color: Don't be afraid of color! A pop of color can brighten your entire look and make you feel more confident. Consider incorporating jewel tones, pastels, or even a bold accent color.
  • Fit is Key: No matter how vibrant your outfit is, it won't look professional if it doesn't fit properly. Invest in tailoring to ensure your clothes flatter your body and make you feel your best.
  • Accessorize Wisely: Accessories are a great way to express your personality. A stylish watch, a unique belt, or a pair of statement earrings can elevate your look and add a personal touch.
The Power of Authentic Expression

Ultimately, what you wear is a form of communication. It tells the world who you are, what you value, and how you want to be perceived. By embracing color, pattern, and personal style in our professional wardrobes, we can break free from the grayscale and express our authentic selves. Just like "Pop Muzik," our clothing can be a celebration of individuality, a vibrant expression of who we are. It's time to ditch the drab and embrace the dynamic.

TLDR: It's time to find our own professional "Pop Muzik."
